KTH — the Royal Institute of Technology — is Sweden's largest technical university and a magnet for international researchers. Whether you're coming for a 3-month collaboration, a postdoc, or a sabbatical, housing will be your biggest practical challenge.
What KTH Offers
KTH has a dedicated Relocation Services team that can help with housing. They manage a limited number of furnished rooms and apartments on or near the KTH campus.
📍 KTH Housing Locations
- Brinellvägen 6 — on campus, close to the Main Library
- Drottning Kristinas väg 34B & 36A — adjacent to campus
- Hemmet (Drottning Kristinas väg 43B) — historic building
- Teknikringen 60–70 — campus housing area
All KTH housing is furnished and located within walking distance of the campus. Contracts range from 2 to 12 months.
How to Apply
- Complete the Registration form for KTH Relocation (your host department usually initiates this)
- Indicate that you need accommodation for at least 2 months
- You'll receive a link to the housing application in Mobility Online
- Both steps must be completed for your application to be processed

The Honest Assessment
⚠️ What KTH Doesn't Emphasize
- Housing is not guaranteed. KTH says "limited number" — and they mean it.
- Apply 6 months ahead. The official recommendation is 3 months; experienced researchers say 6.
- No pets allowed. If you're bringing a pet, KTH Housing is not an option.
- Family apartments are scarce. If you're coming with a partner or children, expect to look independently.
- Shared accommodation possible. You may be offered a shared apartment with another researcher.
- Not all offers are 12 months. You might get a shorter contract and need to move mid-stay.
Plan B: Where KTH Researchers Actually Live
When KTH Housing doesn't work out — and for many researchers, it doesn't — here's where people end up:
1. Subletting in the City (6,000–12,000 SEK/month)
Search Qasa or Blocket Bostad for sublets. Be extremely careful about scams — never pay before viewing. Contracts are usually temporary (3–12 months).
2. Wenner-Gren Foundation (30+ month wait)
The Wenner-Gren Foundations offer furnished apartments for PhD+ researchers. The waiting list is currently around 30 months. Apply early if you plan a future stay.
3. Private Rooms in Residential Villas
This is what many of our researcher guests choose — a furnished room in a quiet residential area with fiber internet, kitchen access, and a proper workspace. Less institutional, more like actually living in Sweden.
